Serena Grace Lopez

Tuesday, July 22nd 2008, 7:00am on the dot - our littlest Lopez decided to come & join the rest of the family. Exactly full term at 37th week, Serena just couldn't wait to see the world. She is beautiful and perfect. And Devin loves her. Whenever he hears her cry after waking from her nap, he yells " Mommy, Daddy-come pick her up!". Too cute!

A few hours old Serena, sucking her thumb.

Hanging out with the guys.

Uncle Mike dropping by to say hi.

Serena's Birth Story

OK-I know people are going to ask or curious to know about the how, when & what...So, instead of re-telling the tale, I'll post it on the blog...
First of all, we didn't expect Serena to be here so soon. Before we went to bed that night, we were still kicking around with the names, Serena & another one and didn't really decide it was going to be this one or another.
4:10am-I woke up with some mild cramps-thinking it was just Braxton-Hicks(false labor)& didn't think much-went to the bathroom, half asleep-wondering whether was that pee or was it my water leaking (it felt like just a trickle of water)... Thinking to myself, ok let's pretend it's pee because I'm tired & need some shut eye...then got up again within a minute thinking better be safe then sorry...and then I realized the cramps are perhaps are the real deal. Ok started packing for Devin's bag (my bag was done months ago) for his stay with Olivier (his little buddy) & his mom. Then I was making so much noise-I woke Andrew up. When I told him I might be in labor & my water probably broke-he got all nervous & started to jump into his clothes...I told him to relax & go take a shower-he looked at me like I was crazy. I told him I was feeling fine & it might still take a while...
5:10am-by the time we called my MD & Andrew went to get the car, I was doubling in pain. I was still thinking to my self, ok, still not too bad...woke Devin up, he was so excited-he said "baby sister coming-get the diapers!" (Because we told him the little bitsy diapers we bought were for his baby sister...) We dropped Devin off at Olivier's...but not without a bit of a funny story which we'll save for another time...
Around 6:00amish, we arrived at the hospital. Ooooh-the ride was not fun. Having intense contractions & riding on the bumpy road...hmmm...undescribeable-just try to avoid it at all cost, ladies!
At the hospital-as soon as we arrived on the labor & delivery floor, I requested for an epidural. The first answer I got was "we have to evaluate you first-then we'll go from there"...I requested a second time, "ok-we'll see", the third time-an honest answer finally(!)-"honey-you're so far along, you're too late for one! Your baby would come right out if you were to stand up." I was fully dilated. I think I wanted to cry. Or probably did.
Now the nurses & Andrew were great, they coached me through with breathing & tried to do what they could to get my mind off the pain...but really answering questions was not my favorite thing to do while in intense pain which at one point a nurse was doing. My MD was late, stuck in traffic. The resident, hmmm...if I could, I would've asked him to leave. One point I saw him kind of just sitting there, staring into space, and later on, he said to me, "Just do what you feel like doing, if you want to keep breathing, go ahead or if you want to start pushing, then do that." LOL...I'm laughing while writing this, but at that moment I was ready to show him what I was really feeling like doing...to him!
Anyway, my MD finally showed up, but he was in his dress clothes so he had to go change. Moments later, I started pushing, then everyone started to talk at once. About breathing, pushing, almost there, crowning, ring of fire...all a blur to me. All I did was screaming at the top of my lungs and I'm SO not a screamer...
7:00am, our baby girl arrived. The RN asked Andrew, what her name is going to be...Andrew looked over at me and half asking "Serena?" I chuckled or whatever I did to acknowledge in agreement. So, Serena Grace Lopez was born.
I just want to say that I loved my nurses while staying at the hospital. Especially the night time shifts-better experience than I had with Devin. And even Ina, the orderly from Labor & Delivery, she was wonderful! She basically cleaned me from head to toe & dressed me after giving birth. And so thankful that Olivier & his parents for having Devin stayed with them at the crack of dawn. And without the grace of God, I don't think I could've pulled off giving birth without the medication.

Graduation Party

Last Saturday we went to our nieces' graduation party. Yep, 3 (out of 6) of our nieces, Sandy from college, Maggie from high school & Terri from middle school. Wow, how time flies. I still have images of them in diapers! And two of them I helped bath at one time!
The party was fun, and it was just another excuse to get together with family & friends.

Theresa (Maggie & Terri's cousin is also a graduate from high school),
Sandy, Terri, Maggie & of course Devin had to run in there to be in the picture!

My 35th Week Update...

This past Tuesday was my 35th week of pregnancy. Not much has changed (except my weight & silhouette), the MD felt the baby has already moved into position but will confirm when he does an internal exam on my 37th week. And I will need antibiotic when I go into labor. Other than that, my MD says I'm doing "beautifully".
I feel fine other than the kicking & stretching of my baby girl. She is really testing the elasticity of my belly. She kicks harder than Devin too, in utero. I don't remember being uncomfortable with Devin but with this baby, she is a little ninja.
My MD also mentioned that this baby will probably come before the 40th week given that Devin arrived on the 38th week. Well, I really pray that she will stay till the 40th week since I have things that I want to get done. And I need to get my haircut-couldn't get an appointment till next Saturday and if I don't make it, I'll be the only asian Repunzel giving birth...

It's been a while...

...since I've last blogged. Last week was a haze, at least for me, with Devin under the weather. I think I did laundry 5 times or could be more, after a couple of times I lost count. He had a stomach virus that lasted about 5 days. Everything he drank or ate just went right through him and one of those days he didn't eat more than three bites of food. We tried Pedialyte, gatorade but he only wanted water (I should've thought of smart water but really, I didn't think...). Then he wanted vitamin water, and we found one flavor that actually contained electrolyte...By Saturday (he started not feeling well Monday), he felt better, he ate little but everything stayed inside of him, thank God!

And this week, Devin is eating like a teenager! Most of the mornings this week, he would have 2 breakfasts, a normal lunch, a snack after his nap (which is usually another lunch size meal) and a good size dinner. For example- today, he had an egg & 2 turkey sausages for breakfast (his usual breakfast), some bread sticks for snack, half of a ham & cheese wrap and a hot dog (with bread) for lunch, 2 more turkey dog with a slice of bread after his nap and some pasta with chicken parm (almost same portion as Andrew's) for dinner with some bread. Then right before he went to bed tonight, he said he was hungry & wanted some bread...he ate a mini croissant and a slice of italian bread. OK-where does it all go in this 3 year old boy?! I wanted to say he's just making it up for last week but he would eat like this a few times a month. Not that I mind at all, I just find it humorous & a joy to watch him eat.

Playing with his friends at Astoria Park after his swimming class & a big lunch.

Olivier's Birthday Party!

Devin's little friend, Olivier turned 3 on June 7th, but just had his party this past Sunday. There were an abundant of food, kids humor, & kids tears. All in all, everyone had fun and yes, including the parents.

Our Friends...

Our friends Larry & Ruby got engaged at stroke of midnight on Father's Day. Apparently Larry had this planning for a while. And Ruby had no idea! After church, we went out for Indian food to celebrate. We are so excited for them & can't wait for their wedding in November!

Congrats to the newly engaged couple!
